Back to the Future, Forward to the Past
2016 Collective narration, installation
Since 2005, Hörner/Antlfinger have been working on a processual complex of works called “Time Travel Experiments – Speaking with the Unconscious Social Mind” with different groups of participants at several locations on the Balkan Peninsula. After the first time travel experiment in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, another was carried out in Istanbul in 2010. The end of Hörner/Antlfinger’s Balkan Trilogy is the project “Sarajevo Time Travel Agency. Pasts, Presents, Futures,” being presented in Sarajevo in April 2016.
The Cologne-based artist duo works with ideas from the American psychologist and constructivist Milton H. Erickson, the founder of modern hypnotherapy. Erickson took his clients on mental journeys through time with the aim of them reflecting on images from their past, introducing new perspectives and ultimately formulating visions for their own future development. “Our time travel experiments are about creating an opportunity to engage with the past, present and future of the city beyond everyday discourse and at another level of consciousness and exchange ideas pertaining to our imaginations. In that way we comprehend the city as an extension of our own bodies,” say Hörner/Antlfinger. “The process of imagining, the inner, creative work as a resource which we all have at our disposal” is the focal point.
In Duesseldorf they will be offering three journeys through time aimed at anyone with a personal connection to the city to coincide with the exhibition launch of their previous projects. Under psychological supervision, the time-travellers go into a light trance and imagine the city through the ages. The images which come about in this way can then be captured in drawings, words or notes and ultimately discussed with fellow travellers. (Darija Šimunović)
